Getting Started in Scuba
One of the most common questions we get is: “I want to Scuba Dive, how do I get started?”
Step 01
Complete the Paperwork
Start by filling out the required forms, including a medical questionnaire. If you answer “YES” to any of the health-related questions, you’ll need a physician’s approval confirming you’re fit to dive.
Step 02
Choose Your Learning Method
You can complete the academic portion of your training in one of two ways:
• A two-day, in-person course at our facility
• PADI’s online eLearning program, allowing you to study at your own pace
Step 03
Demonstrate Basic Swimming Skills
Before beginning your dive training, you’ll need to complete a simple swim test:
• Swim 200 yards continuously using any stroke, or 300 yards with a mask, snorkel, and fins
• Float or tread water for 10 minutes without assistance
If you need help improving your swimming skills, our instructors are happy to assist.
Step 04
Confined Water Dives
In a controlled environment like a pool, you’ll practice essential scuba skills under the supervision of a certified instructor. This step ensures you feel comfortable and confident before moving on to open water dives.
Step 05
Open Water Certification Dives
The final step is applying what you’ve learned in real-world conditions by completing your open water dives. You can do this at:
• Local dive sites during warmer months
• The geothermal Homestead Crater in Utah during winter trips
• A destination of your choice while on vacation
If you plan to travel, consider our Diver Referral program, which allows you to complete your initial training with us and finish your certification dives at your chosen dive destination.
